Zora Ball attended the Harambee Institute of Science and Technology Charter School in West Philadelphia, where she joined the STEMnasium Learning Academy, an after-school programme introducing children as young as first grade to computer science fundamentals.
Through the programme's 48-week course, Ball learned to use Bootstrap, a programming language specifically designed to teach children aged twelve to sixteen complex mathematical and computational concepts through building actual video games β remarkable given Ball was only in first grade herself.
In 2013, at just seven years old, Ball completed and presented a full-version mobile game application at the University of Pennsylvania's Bootstrap Expo, becoming the youngest person in the world known to have developed a complete mobile video game.
Ball's achievement drew national media attention as an example of the potential for early childhood computer science education to unlock exceptional ability well before children reach traditional programming instruction age, and her story has continued to inspire STEM education initiatives for young Black children.
