Alena Analeigh Wicker showed prodigious academic ability from an early age, reading chapter books at age three, and was later adopted and raised by her mother Daphne McQuarter outside Fort Worth, Texas, who homeschooled her for a period after Wicker experienced bullying at school.
Wicker graduated from high school at just twelve years old, then completed more than half of her undergraduate degree requirements in a single year through dual enrollment at Arizona State University and Oakwood University, initially pursuing astronomical and planetary science with hopes of working at NASA.
In 2022, at thirteen years old, Wicker was accepted into the University of Alabama at Birmingham's Heersink School of Medicine through the Burroughs Wellcome Scholars Early Assurance Program, becoming the youngest Black person in United States history to be accepted into medical school.
Wicker also became the youngest person ever to work as an intern at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and founded Brown STEM Girl, a foundation supporting Black girls pursuing science education, extending her own remarkable achievements into advocacy for the next generation.
