Robyn Rihanna Fenty was born on 20 February 1988 in Saint Michael, Barbados, and grew up amid a difficult home life marked by her father's struggles with substance addiction, an experience she has spoken about publicly in later interviews. She began singing as a child and, at age fifteen, auditioned for American record producer Evan Rogers while he was vacationing in Barbados, leading to a trip to the United States to record demo tapes that eventually secured her a recording contract with Def Jam Recordings in 2005, personally signed by label head Jay-Z.

Rihanna released her debut album Music of the Soul in 2005, followed rapidly by A Girl Like Me in 2006, establishing her as a rising pop and R&B artist, but it was her 2007 single 'Umbrella,' featuring Jay-Z, that became her international breakthrough, spending seven weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and establishing the propulsive, genre-blending pop sound that would characterise much of her subsequent recording career.

Over the following decade Rihanna released a string of commercially dominant albums, including Good Girl Gone Bad (2007), Rated R (2009), Loud (2010) and Anti (2016), amassing fourteen number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100 and becoming one of the best-selling music artists in history, while also building a substantial acting career with roles in films including Battleship and Ocean's 8.

In 2017 Rihanna launched Fenty Beauty, a cosmetics line notable for its deliberately extensive shade range — 40 foundation shades at launch, a dramatic expansion beyond typical industry offerings that was widely credited with pressuring the broader cosmetics industry to improve inclusivity for darker skin tones. The brand achieved extraordinary commercial success, reportedly generating over $100 million in revenue within its first weeks and establishing Rihanna as a formidable business figure well beyond music.

Rihanna expanded her business empire further with Savage X Fenty, a lingerie line similarly emphasising size and body inclusivity, launched in 2018, and continued developing her portfolio of ventures across beauty, fashion and other business interests. In 2021 Forbes formally recognised her as a billionaire, and specifically as the wealthiest female musician in the world, with the substantial majority of her fortune derived from her beauty and fashion businesses rather than her music career, an unusual and notable pattern among major recording artists.

Rihanna paused new full-length music releases for an extended period after 2016 while focusing on her business ventures and, from 2020, her relationship and family with rapper A$AP Rocky, though she returned to major public performance with a widely praised Super Bowl LVII halftime show in 2023. She has also engaged in substantial philanthropy through the Clara Lionel Foundation, named for her grandparents, funding education, health and disaster relief initiatives particularly across the Caribbean, and was appointed a National Hero of Barbados in 2021, one of the country's highest honours, in recognition of her global cultural and economic impact on her home nation.
