Margaret Ebunoluwa Aderin was born in Islington, London, in 1968 to Nigerian parents, Caroline Philips and Justus Adebayo Aderin, and grew up in Camden. Diagnosed with dyslexia as a child, she nonetheless developed an early fascination with space, building her own telescope as a teenager after watching a teacher's low expectations fail to dim her ambition to become an astronaut.
She studied Physics at Imperial College London, graduating in 1990, before completing a PhD in Mechanical Engineering there in 1994, focused on instruments to detect landmines while working at the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency. She went on to design scientific instruments for major international projects, including the Gemini Observatory telescopes in Chile and the James Webb Space Telescope.
Since February 2014, Aderin-Pocock has co-presented the BBC's long-running astronomy programme The Sky at Night alongside Chris Lintott, becoming one of the most recognisable science communicators in Britain. She has presented numerous other BBC documentaries, including Do We Really Need the Moon? and Stargazing Live, and regularly tours schools to encourage children, particularly girls, into STEM careers.
In 2009 she was awarded an MBE for services to science education, and in 2020 became the first Black woman to win a gold medal in the Institute of Physics's Physics News Award. She served as President of the British Science Association from 2021 to 2022, has been Chancellor of the University of Leicester since 2023, and was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire, later adopting the name Dame Margaret Aderin.
