Gladys Mae West was born on 27 October 1930 in Sutherland, Virginia, and grew up on a farm, determined from a young age to escape the physically demanding agricultural labour that defined her family's life through educational achievement; she graduated as valedictorian of her segregated high school class, earning a scholarship to Virginia State College, a historically Black institution, where she studied mathematics.
West graduated with a degree in mathematics in 1952 and, after briefly teaching, returned to Virginia State to complete a master's degree, before being hired in 1956 by the Naval Surface Warfare Center in Dahlgren, Virginia, becoming only the second Black woman ever hired there and one of just four Black employees at the facility at the time, entering a technical research environment still overwhelmingly white and male.
West worked on complex mathematical modelling projects analysing the motions of Pluto relative to Neptune, work that earned recognition for its computational accuracy, before shifting her research focus toward satellite geodesy, the mathematical modelling of Earth's precise shape, gravitational field and surface features using satellite data, work that would become directly foundational to the technology underlying modern GPS.
West's mathematical modelling work through the 1970s and 1980s, calculating an increasingly precise mathematical model of the Earth's exact geometric shape (technically known as a geoid), became essential input data for the algorithms underlying the Global Positioning System, work she completed as part of a large research team but for which her specific mathematical contributions provided crucial foundational computational accuracy.
West's contribution to GPS technology remained largely unrecognised publicly for decades, known only within specialised satellite geodesy research circles, until a chance conversation with a member of her sorority in 2017 led to public recognition of her role, sparking a rapid wave of media attention and formal honours recognising a contribution that had, by then, become invisibly embedded within a technology used by billions of people worldwide daily without any awareness of its underlying mathematical origins.
West received the Air Force Space Command's Hall of Fame induction in 2018 and was named one of the BBC's 100 Women that same year, receiving substantial public recognition roughly four decades after completing the foundational mathematical work underlying GPS. She has continued speaking publicly about her career and the broader history of Black women's underrecognised contributions to major American scientific and technological achievements, remaining an active public voice into her nineties on a contribution whose true significance only became widely known decades after it was completed.
