Annie J. Easley was born on 23 April 1933 in Birmingham, Alabama, and was raised by a mother who insisted she could become anything she wanted, encouraging her academic ambitions despite the severe constraints of the segregated South. Easley initially pursued pharmacy studies before her local pharmacy school closed, redirecting her toward mathematics and eventually a career in the emerging field of computing.
In 1955 Easley responded to a newspaper article about twin sisters working as 'computers' — a job title referring to people who performed complex mathematical calculations by hand — at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA), NASA's precursor agency, and was hired the following day, becoming one of only four Black employees among NACA's roughly 2,500-person workforce at the time.
Easley transitioned from manual human computing to computer programming as electronic computers became increasingly central to NASA's work, teaching herself programming languages and becoming a skilled developer of code used in researching energy-conversion systems, including work on the Centaur rocket stage, technology that became foundational to numerous subsequent space missions, including satellite launches and interplanetary probes.
Easley's four-decade NASA career included significant work developing software analysing solar, wind and battery technologies during the 1970s energy crisis, applying her computing expertise to alternative energy research alongside her core aerospace work, work that contributed to hybrid vehicle battery technology research decades before such technology reached widespread commercial application.
Easley faced persistent discrimination throughout her NASA career, including being excluded from photographs documenting her own project teams' work and having her contributions attributed to colleagues, patterns of erasure common to many Black women scientists and engineers of her generation despite their genuine technical contributions to major national research programmes.
Beyond her technical work, Easley served as an equal employment opportunity counsellor at NASA, addressing complaints of race and gender discrimination within the agency, and mentored students through NASA's outreach programmes, using her position to actively work toward improving conditions for those who followed her rather than treating her own career success as sufficient in itself. She retired from NASA in 1989 after 34 years of service, and died in 2011, her contributions receiving substantially wider public recognition in subsequent years as broader public awareness of NASA's 'hidden figures' — the Black women mathematicians and engineers whose work was long underrecognised — grew significantly following renewed historical attention to this generation of scientists.
