๐Ÿ“– Biography

Vere Bird began his working life in Antigua's sugar industry before becoming involved in labour organising, eventually founding the Antigua Trades and Labour Union to advocate for the rights of the island's predominantly Black workforce.

Bird went on to found the Antigua Labour Party, building it into the dominant political force on the island across several decades, and served as the territory's Chief Minister and Premier during the lengthy process of constitutional reform preceding full independence.

In 1981, Antigua and Barbuda achieved full independence from Britain, and Bird became the nation's first Prime Minister, leading the newly independent country during its formative early years of nationhood.

Bird's decades of leadership, spanning labour organising through to national independence, established him as the central figure in Antigua and Barbuda's 20th century political history, and he remained a dominant force in the country's politics for much of his life.
