Stormzy

Michael Ebenazer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr., known professionally as Stormzy, was born on 26 July 1993 in Croydon, South London, and grew up in a single-parent household, developing an interest in grime music — a distinctly British genre blending rap, electronic and Jamaican dancehall influences that emerged from London's council estates — through the local scene around him as a teenager.

Stormzy began releasing music independently through YouTube and SoundCloud in the early 2010s, building a substantial grassroots following before signing with a major label. His 2017 debut album, Gang Signs & Prayer, became the first grime album to reach number one on the UK Albums Chart, a landmark commercial breakthrough for a genre that had previously struggled for mainstream chart recognition despite its cultural significance within Black British youth culture.

Stormzy's 2019 headline performance at Glastonbury Festival, historically a predominantly white, rock-oriented event, became a defining cultural moment, incorporating explicit references to Black British identity, police violence, and the Grenfell Tower fire, delivered with a stage design and choreography deliberately centring Black British culture on one of the country's most prominent cultural stages, a performance widely regarded as a landmark moment for grime's mainstream cultural arrival.

In 2018 Stormzy founded the Stormzy Scholarship, funding full tuition and maintenance costs for Black British students to attend the University of Cambridge, directly addressing the significant and persistent underrepresentation of Black students at the UK's most prestigious universities. The scholarship programme has since expanded and been credited with measurably increasing Black student enrolment at Cambridge in the years following its launch.

Stormzy has continued combining commercial music success with sustained social advocacy, founding #Merky Books, a publishing imprint specifically supporting new writers from underrepresented backgrounds, and #Merky FC, funding football scholarships for young Black players. He has been consistently outspoken on issues including the Black Lives Matter movement, UK government responses to the Windrush scandal, and racial inequality within British institutions more broadly.

Stormzy has received numerous major music honours, including multiple BRIT Awards and MOBO Awards, and was appointed an MBE in 2024 for services to music and charity. He remains one of the most commercially and culturally significant British musicians of his generation, notable for the degree to which he has translated commercial success directly into structural investment in educational and creative opportunity for Black British youth.
