Simone Biles

Simone Arianne Biles was born on 14 March 1997 in Columbus, Ohio. Her early childhood was marked by instability due to her biological mother's struggles with substance abuse, and Biles and her siblings spent time in foster care before her grandfather Ronald Biles and his wife Nellie formally adopted Simone and her younger sister, raising them in Spring, Texas. It is Ron and Nellie whom Biles refers to as her parents.

Biles discovered gymnastics by accident at age six, during a daycare field trip to a gymnastics centre, where coaches immediately noticed her natural power and coordination and invited her to enrol in classes. She began competitive training seriously in her early teens under coach Aimee Boorman, and was homeschooled from age 14 to accommodate the demands of elite training, a decision credited with her rapid rise through the sport's competitive ranks.

Biles won her first US national all-around title in 2013 and her first World Championship all-around title the same year, beginning a run of dominance virtually unprecedented in the sport's history. By the Rio 2016 Olympics she was already considered the best gymnast in the world, and she won four gold medals and a bronze, cementing her position atop global gymnastics.

Between 2013 and 2024, Biles amassed more World Championship medals than any gymnast in history, male or female, and became the most decorated gymnast in world championship history. Four separate skills across vault, floor exercise and balance beam have been named after her in the sport's official code of points — the 'Biles' skills — a distinction reserved for routines so difficult that no other athlete has successfully performed them in competition before.

At the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Biles withdrew from several individual finals after experiencing 'the twisties,' a dangerous loss of spatial awareness mid-air that put her at serious risk of injury, citing the need to protect her mental health and physical safety. The decision sparked a global conversation about athlete wellbeing over performance pressure and was widely praised, though also drew criticism from some quarters, testing her resolve in real time on the world's biggest stage.

Biles returned to elite competition at the Paris 2024 Olympics, adding further gold medals to her collection and completing what many commentators described as one of the most remarkable comebacks in sporting history. She has become an outspoken advocate for athlete mental health, foster care awareness, and survivors of sexual abuse, having testified before the US Senate about abuse she suffered within USA Gymnastics' former team doctor scandal.
