Shirley Ann Jackson was born on 5 August 1946 in Washington, D.C., and displayed strong scientific aptitude from childhood, encouraged by her parents to pursue rigorous academic study; she attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) beginning in 1964, one of very few Black students, and few women of any race, in the institution's physics programme at the time, often facing social isolation and exclusion from study groups during her undergraduate years.
Jackson persisted through this isolation, earning her undergraduate degree in physics in 1968, and continued at MIT for doctoral study in theoretical elementary particle physics, becoming, in 1973, the first Black woman to earn a PhD from MIT in any field, and only the second Black American, of any gender, to earn a doctorate in physics from any American institution at that point in history.
Following her doctorate, Jackson conducted research at several prestigious institutions, including CERN in Switzerland and Fermilab and Bell Laboratories in the United States, where her theoretical physics research contributed to developments later applied in telecommunications technology, including work relevant to touch-tone telephones, portable fax machines, fibre optic cables and caller ID technology, translating fundamental theoretical research into technologies with substantial practical, everyday application.
In 1995 President Clinton appointed Jackson chair of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, making her the first woman and first Black American to hold that position, overseeing the safety regulation of the country's nuclear power industry during a period of significant public scrutiny of nuclear safety standards following incidents including Chernobyl and ongoing debates about domestic reactor safety.
In 1999 Jackson became president of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), one of America's oldest technological research universities, becoming the first Black woman to lead a major research university in the United States. During her more than two-decade tenure, she substantially expanded RPI's research funding, facilities and academic reputation, while consistently advocating nationally for increased investment in American science and engineering education to maintain international competitiveness.
Jackson has served on numerous federal science and technology advisory boards, including as a science advisor to several US presidents, and has received extensive recognition for her contributions to physics, science policy and higher education leadership, including the National Medal of Science, awarded by President Obama in 2016, and induction into the National Women's Hall of Fame. She stepped down from RPI's presidency in 2022 after 23 years, leaving a substantial legacy as both a foundational figure in American physics and one of the most significant Black women leaders in the history of American higher education and science policy.
