Samuel Ajayi Crowther was born around 1809 in Osogun, in the Yoruba region of what is now Nigeria, and was captured into slavery around age thirteen when his village was raided during regional wars, sold and traded several times before ending up on a Portuguese slave ship.
In April 1822 a British Royal Navy patrol intercepted the slave ship and freed its captives, transporting Crowther to Freetown, Sierra Leone, a British colony established to resettle Africans liberated from the slave trade, where he was educated by Anglican missionaries and baptised.
In 1841 Crowther was invited to join an expedition up the Niger River aimed at suppressing the slave trade and spreading Christianity; though the expedition largely failed, his detailed journal earned him acclaim, and he was summoned to England and ordained into the Anglican Church in 1843.
Crowther went on to found the Yoruba Mission and the Niger Mission with fellow missionary Henry Townsend, published the first Yoruba dictionary, and translated the Bible and the Book of Common Prayer into Yoruba, producing lasting foundational texts for Yoruba Christianity.
On St Peter's Day 1864, Crowther was consecrated Bishop of the Niger Territory at Canterbury Cathedral, becoming the first African to hold a bishopric in the Anglican Church, though in his final years European missionaries undermined his authority and forced him to accept diminished control over the mission he had built.

- Trauma can be transformed into a lifetime of building. Crowther turned his own enslavement and rescue into decades of missionary, linguistic and institutional achievement.
- Institutional recognition can still come with limits. Even as Bishop, Crowther faced racial discrimination from younger European missionaries who resented an African leading the mission he founded.
