Robert L. Johnson

Robert Louis Johnson was born on 8 April 1946 in Hickory, Mississippi, and moved with his family to Illinois as a child. He earned a master's degree in international affairs from Princeton University and worked in journalism and as a Congressional press secretary before joining the National Cable Television Association, where he developed direct expertise in the emerging cable television industry during its early expansion.

In 1979 Johnson identified an underserved market opportunity: no cable channel existed programming content specifically for Black American audiences, despite cable television's rapid growth. He secured initial investment from cable industry executives and launched Black Entertainment Television (BET) in 1980, initially broadcasting just two hours per week before expanding to a full-time channel.

Johnson built BET into a substantial media company over the following two decades, expanding its programming across music videos, original series and later, additional related media ventures, and in 1991 took the company public, becoming the first Black-controlled company listed on the New York Stock Exchange, a significant financial and symbolic milestone for Black business ownership.

In 2001 Johnson sold BET to media conglomerate Viacom for approximately $3 billion, a transaction that made him the first Black American billionaire, a landmark wealth milestone reflecting both his business acumen in building BET and the underlying value of the media audience and market he had identified and served decades earlier when other media companies had overlooked it.

Following the BET sale, Johnson diversified extensively into other business ventures, including hotel ownership, private equity, and, notably, becoming the founding owner of the Charlotte Bobcats NBA franchise in 2002 (later renamed the Charlotte Hornets), making him the first Black majority owner of a major American professional sports franchise, a further landmark breakthrough in an industry where Black ownership at that level had remained essentially nonexistent.

Johnson has continued extensive business and philanthropic activity in subsequent decades, including advocacy for policies supporting Black business ownership and wealth-building, and has been an outspoken voice on issues of racial economic inequality and reparations discussions. He remains a significant figure in American business history, notable for identifying and building an entire media category that established companies had overlooked, and for the subsequent scale of wealth and business diversification that identification enabled.
