Raheem Sterling

Raheem Shaquille Sterling was born on 8 December 1994 in Kingston, Jamaica, and moved to London with his family at age five, developing his football skills through local youth academies before joining Queens Park Rangers and later Liverpool's youth system, where his exceptional pace and technical ability marked him as a significant emerging talent.

Sterling made his professional debut for Liverpool in 2012 and quickly established himself as a first-team regular, before transferring to Manchester City in 2015, where he became a central figure in the club's sustained period of domestic and European success, winning numerous Premier League titles and other major trophies across his tenure there.

Sterling became a prominent England international, representing his adopted country at multiple major tournaments including the 2018 World Cup, and became increasingly outspoken about racial discrimination he and other Black players faced, both from opposing fans and, he argued, in disproportionately negative media coverage compared to white teammates in similar circumstances.

In December 2018 Sterling used social media to directly call out what he characterised as racially biased media coverage, comparing how two young Manchester City players, one Black and one white, were reported after buying houses for their families, a widely discussed intervention credited with significantly advancing public conversation about subtle media bias in British football coverage.

Sterling has continued combining his football career with sustained social justice advocacy, supporting anti-racism initiatives and using his platform to address ongoing discrimination within football and British society more broadly, work recognised through an MBE awarded in 2021 for services to football and racial equality.

Sterling has continued playing at the highest levels of English and international football, and remains a significant figure both for his football achievement, including multiple Premier League titles, and for his consequential advocacy work directly confronting racial bias within football media coverage, a contribution recognised as having meaningfully advanced broader public conversation on the subject.
