Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens was born on 18 March 1970 in Newark, New Jersey, and began rapping as a teenager, adopting the stage name Queen Latifah — Latifah meaning "delicate" or "sensitive" in Arabic. Her 1989 debut album, All Hail the Queen, established her as one of the first prominent female voices in hip-hop, addressing themes of female empowerment and social consciousness at a time when the genre was dominated by male artists.

In 1993 she won the Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance for "U.N.I.T.Y.," a song confronting misogyny and disrespect toward women, cementing her reputation as one of hip-hop's most socially conscious voices. She continued releasing albums through the 1990s while transitioning increasingly into acting and television.

Latifah built a major second career as an actress and producer, earning an Academy Award nomination for her role in Chicago (2002) and a Golden Globe for playing Bessie Smith in the HBO film Bessie (2015), alongside a long-running role as a television host and producer through her company Flavor Unit Entertainment.

Across more than three decades in entertainment, Latifah has become one of the few artists to achieve major recognition across music, film and television, using her platform throughout to advocate for greater representation of women and Black artists across the industries she has worked in.
