Patricia Era Bath was born on 4 November 1942 in Harlem, New York, the daughter of a father who was one of the city's first Black motorman on the subway and a mother who worked as a domestic worker while saving to fund her children's education. Bath excelled academically, winning a National Science Foundation scholarship for a cancer research programme while still in high school, work significant enough that portions were incorporated into a scientific paper presented at a major medical conference.
Bath earned her undergraduate degree from Hunter College and her medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine in 1968, before completing her residency in ophthalmology, becoming the first Black person to complete a residency in that specialty at New York University. During her training she observed that blindness and severe vision impairment occurred at dramatically higher rates among Black patients, prompting research that established the connection between limited access to eye care and disproportionate rates of preventable blindness in underserved Black communities.
In 1976 Bath co-founded the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness, developing the concept of 'community ophthalmology,' a public health approach that brought basic eye care and screening services directly to underserved communities rather than requiring patients to access traditional clinical settings, an approach credited with saving the sight of thousands of people who would otherwise have lacked access to preventive care.
Bath became the first Black woman to complete a residency in ophthalmology in the United States, and in 1983 became the first woman to chair an ophthalmology residency training programme in the country, at UCLA's Jules Stein Eye Institute, a significant institutional leadership breakthrough in a medical specialty that had been slow to include women and Black physicians in senior positions.
Bath's most significant technical achievement came through her invention of the Laserphaco Probe, a device using laser technology to more precisely and less invasively remove cataracts, a major advance over existing surgical techniques of the era. She received a patent for the device in 1988, becoming the first Black woman physician to receive a patent for a medical invention, and the Laserphaco technique has since been used to restore or improve sight for patients worldwide, including in regions with limited access to advanced surgical resources.
Bath continued practising medicine, teaching, and advocating for equitable access to eye care throughout her career, holding multiple additional patents related to her laser surgery innovations. She died in 2019 from cancer, and is remembered as a pioneering figure whose combination of technical medical invention and public health advocacy directly addressed both the clinical and structural dimensions of preventable blindness, particularly within underserved communities.
