Milton Augustus Margai was born the eldest of eighteen children to a prosperous businessman father in Gbangbatoke, in what was then the British Protectorate of Sierra Leone. After early education in Sierra Leone, he travelled to England to study medicine at King's College, Durham, becoming the first person from Sierra Leone's Protectorate region to qualify as a physician, and returned home in 1928 to practise medicine and become a prominent public health campaigner.
Margai spent over two decades in the colonial medical service, building deep personal relationships and trust across the Protectorate that would prove decisive when he entered formal politics after the Second World War. In 1951, he became the founding leader of the Sierra Leone People's Party (SLPP), and when Sierra Leone was granted self-governing status in 1954, he became Chief Minister, later knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1959 for his service.
Margai led Sierra Leone to full independence from Britain on April 27, 1961, becoming its first Prime Minister after his party's landslide victory in the country's first general election the following year. Known for his conciliatory, unifying leadership style, drawing together traditional chiefs and modernising elites from across the country, he governed until his death in office in 1964, remembered as the principal architect of Sierra Leone's peaceful transition to independence.
