Marilyn Hughes Gaston grew up in Cincinnati, where witnessing her mother suffer without adequate medical care shaped her early determination to become a doctor. She earned her medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1964, becoming a paediatrician focused on the health of underserved children.
Gaston's landmark 1986 research study demonstrated conclusively that early screening for sickle cell disease in newborns, combined with preventive antibiotic treatment, dramatically reduced infant deaths from the condition. The findings were rigorous enough to change national policy.
Her research directly led to the US government mandating universal newborn screening for sickle cell disease across all fifty states, a public health measure that has since saved the lives of countless infants who would otherwise have gone undiagnosed until symptoms became life-threatening.
