π Biography
Kehinde Wiley was raised by a single mother in South Central Los Angeles, one of six siblings, and took his first art class at age 11. At 12 he spent a year studying art and Russian in the Soviet Union before earning degrees from the San Francisco Art Institute and Yale University.
Wiley became known for placing contemporary Black subjects β often people he approached on the street β into the poses and grandeur of Old Master European portraiture, questioning who has historically been deemed worthy of monumental art.
In 2017 he was commissioned to paint former President Barack Obama's official portrait for the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery, becoming the first Black artist to paint an official U.S. presidential portrait.
