📖 Biography

Herman Mashaba grew up in poverty under apartheid and, denied access to many formal employment and educational opportunities available to white South Africans, turned to entrepreneurship as one of the few paths available to him.

In 1985, Mashaba founded Black Like Me, a hair and cosmetics company specifically developing products for Black South African consumers, starting with almost no capital and building the business into one of the country's most recognised Black-owned brands.

Mashaba became a prominent advocate for free-market economic policy and entrepreneurship in South Africa, frequently writing and speaking about the barriers facing Black business owners and the importance of economic freedom in addressing the country's inequality.

Mashaba later entered politics, serving as Mayor of Johannesburg from 2016 to 2019 before founding his own political party, ActionSA, extending his influence from business success into direct political engagement with South Africa's governance challenges.
