Herbert Wigwe trained as a chartered accountant, beginning his career at Coopers & Lybrand before spending a decade at Guaranty Trust Bank, building deep banking sector expertise ahead of his defining career move.
In 2002, Wigwe co-founded and acquired Access Bank alongside fellow banker Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, becoming deputy managing director before taking over as CEO in 2014 and leading the bank through a period of dramatic transformation.
Under Wigwe's leadership, Access Bank's landmark 2019 acquisition of Diamond Bank made it Nigeria's largest bank by total assets, and he drove an ambitious pan-African expansion, acquiring or taking majority stakes in banks across Kenya, South Africa, Angola, Botswana and Mozambique.
Wigwe died in February 2024 alongside his wife and son in a helicopter crash in California while travelling to attend the Super Bowl, a tragedy that sent shockwaves through Nigerian business and was mourned by President Bola Tinubu and leaders across the continent.
