George Robert Carruthers was born on 1 October 1939 in Cincinnati, Ohio, and developed an early passion for astronomy after building his first telescope at age ten with his father's help, an interest that persisted through a childhood affected by his father's death when Carruthers was twelve, after which the family moved to Chicago, where he continued pursuing his scientific interests independently.

Carruthers earned his PhD in aeronautical and astronautical engineering from the University of Illinois in 1964, specialising in far ultraviolet astronomy, a field examining wavelengths of light invisible to the human eye and largely blocked by Earth's atmosphere, requiring observation equipment specifically designed for use above the atmosphere in space.

Carruthers joined the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C., in 1964, and developed and patented, in 1969, a far ultraviolet camera and spectrograph capable of capturing images and spectral data in wavelengths invisible to conventional cameras, a significant technical innovation for astronomical observation from space.

In 1972 Carruthers's ultraviolet camera was carried to the Moon aboard Apollo 16 and deployed on the lunar surface by astronauts, becoming the first Moon-based space observatory and capturing the first images of Earth's outer atmosphere from space, along with images of stars and galaxies in ultraviolet wavelengths never previously observed, a landmark achievement in observational astronomy directly enabled by Carruthers's original invention.

Carruthers continued significant research throughout his career at the Naval Research Laboratory, contributing to subsequent NASA missions and ultraviolet astronomy research, and became deeply committed to science education and mentorship, particularly for minority students, developing programmes bringing hands-on space science experience to students who might otherwise lack access to such opportunities.

Carruthers received the National Medal of Technology and Innovation from President Obama in 2013, recognising both his foundational ultraviolet camera invention and his sustained contribution to science education, and died in 2020. He remains remembered as a significant figure in observational astronomy whose ultraviolet camera provided some of the first direct scientific evidence of phenomena in space previously unobservable from Earth, a landmark technical achievement carried literally to the surface of the Moon.
