๐Ÿ“– Biography

Ewuare, remembered as Ewuare n'Ogidigan, Ewuare the Great, was the 12th Oba, or king, of the Kingdom of Benin, in what is now southern Nigeria. His reign is reconstructed from Edo oral tradition and later historical writing rather than from surviving records written at the time, so dates are approximate. Most accounts place his accession around 1440 and his death between about 1473 and 1481.

According to the tradition, Ewuare came to the throne after a struggle with his brother Uwaifiokun, who had usurped power. Benin's oral history credits a woman named Emotan with helping him during this struggle, and she remains one of the best-loved figures of Benin City's past.

Once on the throne, Ewuare rebuilt and enlarged the capital, extended its walls and ditches, and reorganised the government. He reduced the uneasy balance between the Oba and the chiefs and gained a monopoly on military power, which enabled the expansion of the kingdom. Historians describe his reign as the moment when Benin was transformed from a city-state into a modern state structure.

He is also remembered as a great innovator in culture and religion. He introduced royal beads, started or expanded festivals including Ugie Ewere, brought in new cults including Ake, Oza and Okhwahe, and encouraged the carving of ivory and wood, crafts for which Benin became world-famous. Tradition describes him as a mystic, a physician, a traveller and a warrior.

Ewuare's descendants ruled Benin for centuries, and the great ivories and court arts of the later kingdom grew from the court he built. In 2016 the current Oba of Benin, Ewuare II, took his throne name in tribute to the 15th-century king.
