📖 Biography

Evelyn Boyd Granville graduated valedictorian from Washington's Dunbar High School and summa cum laude in mathematics from Smith College. In 1949, she earned her Ph.D. in mathematics from Yale University, becoming one of the first two African American women to hold a mathematics doctorate in the United States, alongside Marjorie Lee Browne.

After teaching at Fisk University, Granville joined IBM in 1956 as a computer programmer, then moved into the space race, writing software for NASA's Project Vanguard and Project Mercury that analysed satellite orbits and calculated spacecraft trajectories.

She later returned to academia, teaching mathematics and mentoring students for decades, and remained a public advocate for math education until her death in 2023 at age 99.
