Mary Eugenia Charles studied law at the University of Toronto and the London School of Economics, and upon returning home became Dominica's first female lawyer, building a legal practice that gave her both financial independence and a public platform in an era when few women held such professional standing in the Caribbean.
Charles entered politics in the 1960s, becoming a Member of Parliament in 1975 and founding the Dominica Freedom Party, which she led into government following the 1980 general election. Her victory made her the first woman ever elected to lead a Caribbean nation, a position she held as Prime Minister of Dominica for fifteen years, one of the longest tenures of any Caribbean head of government.
As Prime Minister, Charles pursued conservative fiscal policies and rebuilt Dominica's economy and infrastructure after the devastation of Hurricane David in 1979. She gained international prominence in October 1983 during the crisis surrounding the assassination of Grenada's Maurice Bishop, appearing at a nationally televised White House press conference alongside US President Ronald Reagan to publicly support US-led military intervention in Grenada, a position that established her as one of the Caribbean's most recognisable and controversial political figures. She remained Prime Minister until 1995 and continued to be an influential voice in regional politics until her death in 2005.
