Etta James

Jamesetta Hawkins was born on 25 January 1938 in Los Angeles, California, and began singing in church as a young child, her exceptional vocal talent recognised early despite a difficult childhood marked by an absent father and a mother who struggled with her own personal difficulties, leaving James largely raised by foster families and a strict gospel choir director who first trained her voice.

James formed a vocal trio as a teenager and was discovered by bandleader Johnny Otis, who helped her secure her first recording contract, and her 1955 song 'The Wallflower (Roll With Me, Henry)' became an early hit, launching her recording career within the rhythm and blues genre during the mid-1950s, a period when the genre was rapidly evolving toward what would become rock and roll.

James signed with Chess Records in 1960, and her recording of 'At Last,' a lush, orchestrally arranged ballad, became her signature song and one of the most recognisable and enduringly popular recordings in American music history, showcasing the remarkable emotional depth and vocal control that distinguished her from many contemporaries working in more straightforward rhythm and blues styles.

James built a substantial catalogue across blues, soul, gospel, rock and roll and jazz throughout the 1960s, demonstrating an unusually broad stylistic range that made her difficult to categorise within any single genre, a versatility reflecting both her genuine musical range and the era's still-evolving boundaries between what would later be more distinctly separated as blues, soul and rock genres.

James struggled with heroin addiction for significant periods during the 1960s and 1970s, a struggle that affected her career consistency though she continued recording and performing, eventually achieving successful recovery and continuing an active career into her later decades, including a celebrated late-career resurgence with jazz-influenced recordings that introduced her to new audiences.

James received six Grammy Awards throughout her career, including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993. She died in 2012 from complications related to leukaemia, and remains remembered as one of the most vocally distinctive and stylistically versatile American singers of the 20th century, 'At Last' continuing to be performed and referenced as one of popular music's most enduring romantic ballads decades after its original recording.
