Chiwetel Ejiofor

Chiwetel Umeadi Ejiofor was born on 10 July 1977 in Forest Gate, London, to Nigerian parents, and survived a car accident at age 11 that killed his father, an early tragedy that profoundly shaped his subsequent life and, he has suggested, his approach to acting's capacity for exploring genuine emotional depth. He trained at the National Youth Theatre and the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art before building his early career on stage.

Ejiofor built a substantial early film career including roles in Amistad (1997) and Dirty Pretty Things (2002), the latter earning him a BAFTA nomination and establishing his reputation as a serious dramatic actor, before further significant roles including Love Actually (2003) broadened his mainstream recognition alongside his more prestige-focused dramatic work.

In 2013 Ejiofor delivered the central performance in 12 Years a Slave, Steve McQueen's acclaimed film adapting Solomon Northup's historical memoir of being kidnapped into slavery, a role of extraordinary emotional and physical demand that earned Ejiofor an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor and widespread recognition as one of the most significant dramatic performances of his generation, in a film that went on to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.

Ejiofor was knighted in 2015 for services to drama, and continued building a substantial career across film, television and theatre, including significant stage work in Britain and further film roles demonstrating consistent range across dramatic and, at times, more commercially oriented productions.

Ejiofor made his feature directorial debut with The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind (2019), based on the true story of a young Malawian inventor who built a wind turbine to save his family's farm during a severe famine, a film Ejiofor also wrote and starred in, demonstrating substantial creative range extending beyond acting into writing and directing.

Ejiofor remains one of the most respected British actors of his generation, his performance in 12 Years a Slave standing as a landmark achievement in bringing the historical reality of American slavery to global cinema audiences with unflinching, emotionally devastating authenticity, a body of work spanning stage, screen and directing that has established him as a significant, sustained creative force across British and international cinema.
