Charles Henry Turner earned his PhD in zoology from the University of Chicago in 1907, becoming one of the first Black Americans to earn a doctorate in the sciences, building a research career focused on the previously unexamined question of insect cognition and behaviour.

Despite his exceptional academic credentials, Turner was barred from university research faculty positions throughout his career because of his race, ultimately teaching at a Black high school in St. Louis while conducting groundbreaking scientific research largely without institutional laboratory support.

Turner's research proved, for the first time, that insects could learn from experience, perceive colour, and hear sounds — capacities widely assumed at the time to be exclusive to more complex animals. His experiments on bees, ants and cockroaches produced findings still cited in animal behaviour research today.

Turner published approximately seventy scientific papers over his career, an extraordinary output given his lack of institutional research support, and his pioneering work in what would become the field of animal cognition remained underrecognised for decades before receiving fuller scholarly acknowledgment.
