Charles Frank Bolden Jr. was born on 19 August 1946 in Columbia, South Carolina, and attended the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1968 before becoming a Marine Corps aviator, flying over 100 combat missions during the Vietnam War and building extensive flight experience across a substantial military aviation career.
Bolden was selected as a NASA astronaut in 1980, and flew four Space Shuttle missions between 1986 and 1994, including serving as pilot and later commander of separate missions, building a substantial astronaut career that included deploying the Hubble Space Telescope during one of his missions, a significant contribution to one of astronomy's most important observational instruments.
Bolden's astronaut career placed him among a small but growing group of Black NASA astronauts following Guion Bluford's pioneering 1983 flight, and his command of Space Shuttle missions represented further significant milestones in expanding Black representation within America's most senior space exploration roles.
Following his astronaut career, Bolden continued serving in the Marine Corps, eventually retiring as a Major General, before being nominated by President Barack Obama in 2009 to serve as NASA Administrator, becoming the first Black American to lead the space agency in a permanent capacity, a landmark administrative breakthrough following his own pioneering astronaut career.
As NASA Administrator, a position he held from 2009 to 2017, Bolden oversaw significant transitions in American space policy, including the end of the Space Shuttle programme and NASA's increasing partnership with private space companies for launch capability, alongside continued planning for deep space exploration and eventual Mars mission ambitions.
Bolden has received numerous honours throughout his career spanning military service, astronaut achievement and space agency leadership, and remains a significant figure in NASA history, his trajectory from combat aviator through astronaut to agency administrator representing one of the most complete and senior career arcs achieved by any Black American within the US space programme.
If somebody offers you an amazing opportunity and you're not sure you can do it, say yes — then learn how to do it later.
