Carole Simpson graduated from the University of Michigan and began her journalism career in Chicago radio before moving into television news, working through the 1960s and 1970s at a time when both women and Black journalists faced significant barriers to advancement in American broadcast newsrooms.
Simpson joined NBC News in 1974 and later moved to ABC News in 1982, where she covered major national and international stories over the following two decades, including reporting from the White House and Capitol Hill. In 1988, she became the first woman and first person of colour to solo-anchor a major network's weekend evening newscast, anchoring World News Tonight Sunday for ABC.
In 1992, Simpson became the first Black woman to moderate a US presidential debate, overseeing the second presidential debate between incumbent President George H.W. Bush, challenger Bill Clinton, and independent candidate Ross Perot in a groundbreaking town-hall format. She continued her distinguished career at ABC News for over two decades and later taught journalism, mentoring a new generation of broadcast reporters and remaining an outspoken advocate for greater diversity in American newsrooms.
