Alexander Miles was born on 18 May 1838 in Ohio, and little is documented of his early life; he later relocated to Wisconsin, where he established himself as a successful businessman, working as a barber before building a real estate portfolio and becoming one of the wealthiest Black residents in Duluth, Minnesota, and later Chicago, at a time when significant Black business ownership and wealth accumulation remained rare in these regions.
Miles's most significant technical contribution came from personal observation of a genuinely dangerous flaw in the elevator technology of his era: early elevator shaft doors had to be manually opened and closed by passengers or operators, and the shaft doors themselves often remained open when the elevator car was not present at that floor, creating a serious risk of people or objects falling into an open, uncovered elevator shaft.
In 1887 Miles patented an automatic mechanism that mechanically linked the elevator car's movement to the opening and closing of both the elevator's internal doors and the shaft doors on each floor, ensuring the shaft doors could only open when the car was actually present and aligned at that floor, and would automatically close as the car moved away, eliminating the serious safety hazard of exposed open shafts.
Miles's automatic elevator door mechanism represented a genuinely foundational safety innovation that became standard practice across the elevator industry, and variations of the core principle he patented remain embedded in virtually all modern elevator safety systems worldwide, making his contribution one of the most widely and continuously applied inventions by any Black American inventor of his era, even though his name remains far less widely recognised than the significance of the innovation would suggest.
Miles continued his business career alongside his inventive work, and used his accumulated wealth to become a significant figure within Duluth's small Black community, supporting various civic and community institutions. He held additional patents beyond his elevator door mechanism, reflecting a broader pattern of practical engineering problem-solving throughout his business career.
Miles died in 1918, and though he received limited recognition during his own lifetime relative to his invention's ultimate significance, his automatic elevator door mechanism is now widely cited by engineering historians and safety advocates as a foundational contribution to a technology used by billions of people daily worldwide, a rare instance of a single safety patent's principles remaining continuously relevant and applied more than a century after their initial invention.
