📖 Biography
Born Adelaide Smith into Freetown's educated Creole elite, she was raised largely in England before returning to Sierra Leone in 1892 to try teaching. The experience convinced her that African girls needed schooling built around pride in their own culture, not simply imitation of European models.
In 1923, after years of fundraising across Britain and the United States, she founded the Girls' Vocational and Training School in Freetown, combining practical skills with African history, folklore and song.
In 1925 she caused a sensation by wearing traditional dress to a reception for the Prince of Wales, when every other invited woman had declined to. She ran the school until 1940 and spent her later years writing memoirs and short stories.
