Abdul Samad Isyaku Rabiu was born on 4 August 1960 in Kano, northern Nigeria, the son of Khalifah Isyaku Rabiu, one of Nigeria's foremost industrialists in the 1970s and 1980s, active in textiles and commodities.
Rabiu studied economics at Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, returning to Nigeria at age 24 to help manage the family business during a period when his father was detained under General Buhari's military government.
In 1988 Rabiu founded BUA International, initially importing rice, iron, steel and chemicals, before expanding into cement and sugar production through a series of acquisitions, including the Cement Company of Northern Nigeria in 2009.
BUA Cement began trading publicly on the Nigerian Exchange in January 2020, followed by BUA Foods in January 2022, and by 2026 Rabiu's stake in the two listed companies made him Africa's third-richest person, with a net worth estimated at $11.2 billion.
Through the BUA Foundation and the ASR Africa initiative, Rabiu has committed billions of naira to health, education and infrastructure projects across Nigeria, including funding a paediatric ward at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, and he chairs Nigeria's Bank of Industry.
- Founder and Chairman of BUA Group, one of Nigeria's largest industrial conglomerates
- Chairman of publicly listed BUA Cement Plc and BUA Foods Plc
- Ranked #3 richest person in Africa by Forbes, 2026
- Chairman of Nigeria's Bank of Industry
- Committed billions of naira to health and education through the BUA Foundation and ASR Africa
- Family adversity can sharpen business instinct rather than derail it. Rabiu took over managing BUA at 24 while his father was detained by the military government.
- Public listings can multiply decades of private-sector building. Taking BUA Cement and BUA Foods public in 2020 and 2022 sharply accelerated the growth of his personal fortune.
