Walt Braithwaite was born in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1945, and went on to pursue engineering studies before joining Boeing's Fabrication Division in 1966, at a time when aircraft were still designed almost entirely using paper drawings and physical mock-ups.
By 1975, Braithwaite was leading Boeing's development of computer-aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) systems, technology that allowed engineers to design, model, and test aircraft components digitally rather than by hand. This shift fundamentally changed how commercial aircraft were engineered, reducing errors, cutting development time, and enabling far more complex designs than manual drafting allowed.
His work on Boeing's digital design systems directly enabled the development of the Boeing 777, widely recognised as the first commercial jetliner ever designed entirely without paper drawings — a landmark moment in aerospace manufacturing that set the template most aircraft makers still follow today.
In 2000, Braithwaite was named President of Boeing Africa, becoming the highest-ranking Black executive in the company's history at that time. He was named Black Engineer of the Year in 1995, recognising both his technical contributions and his role advancing opportunities for Black engineers within the aerospace industry.
